Sterkfontein Caves showcases a tour and a scientific exhibition exploring cave formations and geology; early-life forms; mammals and hominin fossils.

An hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Sterkfontein Caves are world famous for their fossil finds and a well-known visitor destination The Sterkfontein Caves site is home to a restaurant, conferencing facilities, easy access to the caves themselves, modern walkways and a boardwalk past the excavation site where world-acclaimed fossils have been discovered.

The Sterkfontein Caves are owned by the University of the Witwatersrand, whose scientists have been responsible for the main excavations of the World Heritage Site. They are credited with many of the famous discoveries including the world famous “Mrs Ples” and “Little Foot”, an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton dating back more than 3-million years.

The tours at the Sterkfontein Caves, which start above ground and then take visitors deep into the caves, run every half hour, seven days a week. 

Admission fees in 2017

Adults: R165
Children (4-14 years): R97
Children under 4: free
Pensioners: R85 (on production of a valid ID)
Students: R100 (on production of a valid student card)
School groups: R90 per pupil

Combination ticket (Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves)

Adults: R190
Children (4-14 years): R125
Children under 4: free
School gorups: R120 per pupil

Please note: the combination ticket is only available until 1pm, in order for visitors to have enough time to see both exhibitions. Student and pensioner discounts do not apply to the combination ticket.

The Maropeng Visitors’ Centre and its restaurants are all wheelchair accessible. Unfortunately, Sterkfontein Caves are not.

Private tours

Private tours into the caves can be arranged at a minimum fee.

Booking in advance is strongly advised for groups as well as individuals, as visitor numbers to the Sterkfontein Caves are limited.

For the enthusiast, tours conducted by scientists can be arranged at an additional cost.
